"I was asked to write info about our trip, thought you might like a copy of what I wrote! The Gordon Harrison Art Inspiration Project was a terrific experience both for myself and for the students. For myself it was very clear to me, watching Gordon work with the students that he had a passion, that he wanted to explain and share that passion and that he enjoyed the experience of sharing that passion with the students. All was done in a low key, encouraging and warm manner. As for the group who had the chance to work with him, they were thrilled to be selected to begin with , a lot of buzz, a lot of excitement. They were asked to rise to the occasion and to really embrace the opportunity they were being presented with. And they did! They saw how an artist approached his subject, had a chance to discuss their likes and observations and then watch the artists’ technique as he prepared his image. This was the first meeting in school, in the art room. Two other in class sessions took place, the students selected landscapes to paint and following the direction of Mr Harrison planned out their images and prepared their canvasses. The next time we met was in the morning at the Gordon Harrison Gallery. We were welcomed with fresh fruit and fresh croissants. Already off to a good start. Thanks Phil. Ten students went on a walkabout and small down town, market area, gallery exploration. There was a very eclectic range of art work to look at, we were taken around by a lovely lady Ingrid from the Gordon Harrison Gallery. The other ten went to work on their canvasses inspired by the original art work, vivid colours surrounding us. With Gordon tapping in to and drawing out the inner artist form each grade six student. They were professional artists painting in a successful gallery set up in the heart of down town. At the end of the session one student acted as curator for the work. In the afternoon we switched groups, oh did I mention the lunch time sandwich scones? Follow up will be the vernissage at the gallery in the new year where the work will be framed and displayed and put up for auction. "Gordon Harrison is an Ottawa landscape artist who quit his comfy government job a few years ago to paint full-time. He now has his own studio in Ottawa's Byward Market, and he has a vernissage this weekend, Friday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 23. The times are 5 to 9 on Friday, and 11 to 5 on Saturday and Sunday, 100 Murray St.

I get sort of melancholy when I look at Gordon's stuff, because I get to thinking about the first painting that I saw of his, about six or seven years ago, at an art show in Rockcliffe. I saw it from across the big room and knew right away that I had to have it. It was kind of like the first time I met Mrs. Big Beat, except she didn't come with a price tag. (The 10th anniversary diamond necklace did.)

Anyhow, I don't have an image of the exact painting that I saw that day, but this smaller version is quite close and gives a good idea of what I saw. I knew from 50 feet away that it was P.E.I., though I've never literally seen a scene such as this on P.E.I. I just knew that it was. And I would have bought it on the spot had not I, er, recently spent a significant amout of money on two other pieces of art, thereby blowing the art budget for that particular quarter. Somebody else bought the painting, and I hope they enjoy until the very day when I break into their house and steal it.

This time Gordon is doing the west coast, with some striking canvases of the mountains. Landscapes, like flowers, are done to the point of banality by amateur artists everywhere, but Gordon's work reminds the viewer that no matter how many hobby painters do their best to make us sick of landscapes, real artists bring the scenes back into our esteem." "One could argue that the Chauvet cave art in southern France dating back at least 32,000 years ago was one of the first examples of art being used in interior spaces.

I consider art a form of creative expression that communicates emotion, mood and/or thought. An artist like Gordon Harrison creates art to provoke a desired response or contemplative state for the beholder. The pure artist’s expression is essentially one of self: it is through his or her art that the artist finds a voice.

Interior Design is also a form of creative expression. A designer foremost creates a space to fulfill a client’s functional requirements; however a designer also enables the client to find their creative voice. Interpretation of the client’s vision and creatively expressing this can be a challenge for designers but at the same time when the client views the final solution for the first time, it can also be very rewarding. An interior never looks completely finished until it has been personalized with the client’s art and accessories. I think more than any other type of project we do, it is the health care facilities whether it is hospitals, retirement homes, or long term care facilities that art plays the most important role. Art can be uplifting, hopeful, or act as a trigger for pleasant memories. Selecting the right piece for the space is crucial however. For instance while a bleak winter scene with an empty bench may be considered thought provoking and dramatic for some, I am not so sure it would be perceived the same way by others when displayed in some of these types of environments. The physical context in which art is appreciated is a significant factor in its effectiveness in communication.

Art selected or commissioned and displayed in the appropriate interior setting not only improves the interior space but also provides a venue for the art to be appreciated and communicated effectively. The homes I sell have at least one thing in common: they are all products of an artistic endeavor both inside and out. These homes all have unique design features and many include some form of artwork.

In summary, it is important to use artwork to show a home to its best advantage. Artwork and design play a complex role in residential real estate sales and a few strategically placed pieces of art can do wonders for the look of a home and may even influence its sale price."
